In Arequipa we’re lucky to have a variety of delicious vegetarian options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can’t help but try them all!
A quick look at the everyday adventures of an Intiwawa volunteer. From kicking back with a book on the roof terrace to playing games with the kids to heading out for some post-Intiwawa drinks – there is never a dull day as a volunteer.
Life in Arequipa can be strange for foreigners, especially in the first few weeks. In many ways, the culture in Arequipa is similar to the lives we come from, but some things are just weird:
Children from poor families barely have access to quality education in Peru. Many children interrupt their school education to help their families make a living. By providing educational support, Intiwawa empowers the children to seek different opportunities and to escape the cycle of poverty.
The Casa Intiwawa in San Isidro is like an island of happiness that often stands in a strong contrast to the world the children come from.
As a generation, we have discovered that we can have everything but time. We sometimes feel as if we would need more than one lifetime to experience the different gifts life can bring us. One of these fantastic gifts is the sweet work of helping others.
It’s summer vacation south of the equator, which means Intiwawa transforms from an after-school program to an AM summer camp. We are currently in the second full week of programming, and are very happy to share the classes and activities our volunteers have organized for Intiwawa’s summer students :).
For most of it’s life, Intiwawa has focused its efforts and activities on the children of San Isidro. It is now our pleasure to announce a new project that will directly benefit every member of the family, no matter the age: a bakery in San Isidro!
